VERY SHORT STORIES- these little books have many uses but they are wonderful for sharing a short story with friends, siblings, parents and grand parents... we even did our own version of The Frog Prince. People are always impressed when child writes then reads her own story.
Four page books are made after several stories have been told at the board for each set of cards:
- The author chooses 4 cards from the story board.
- She arranges them in the order of her story.
- She takes a pre-made book that has by on the cover and 4 pages numbered with a line on which she copies the words from the card.
- She writes the words first in pencil on each page
- Then she illustrates each page (she can copy the image or make her own version.) A more ambitious writer may continue her story by adding pages on the back of the book. I have helped some children tape two books together!
- The teacher helps her choose a picture from her story for the cover. The cover tells something important about the ideas in the book.
- Finally she signs the book on the "by line."
The author reads by using the words as cues and filling in the rest... a friend can read your cues and fill in the story himself. It is a portable one person story board. Children take great pride as they read their finished stories to the class and exchange with friends at silent reading time.
